As part of service to the community, the Eye clinic has embraced the Mission-Vision statement of the Hospital and fashioned products and services that are of high quality, practical and fairly priced for the low to middle income Kenyan population.

Led by George Odhiambo Ohito, a Cataract surgeon of more than 18 years experience, the staff is committed to delivering efficient and quality eye services at affordable rates. We also compliment the general surgical and Medical services in the hospital by offering diagnostic and monitoring of disease processes that present in the eye (high blood pressure, diabetes, etc) and initiate interventions to prevent loss of sight.

In order to further reduce waiting time for the spectacles, we have established a workshop within the centre to fix and glaze simple prescription lenses. Spectacle frames are of varied designs that appeal to the various needs of our clients. Our cataract surgery department is one of the popular service centres in the city patronized by patients/clients from various towns in the country and beyond.

We have a good referral system within the specialty with other service providers so that patients are referred only to specialists who have the patients’ ultimate concern at heart.

In collaboration with service partners and other donors, we regularly give free or subsidized sight restoring cataract surgery both in Nairobi and at our sister hospital in Elementaita.

Our laboratory is equipped with state of the art equipment, and is committed to providing professional, state-of-the-art laboratory diagnostic services. This ensures fast turn-around time and continuity of care, thus enabling us to cope with high demands from our clinicians and patients alike.

The laboratory is run by a diverse, dedicated group of professionals. We provide a wide range of medical laboratory services including routine and STAT testing in the disciplines of Biochemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Blood Banking, Hormonal Analysis, Serology (including HIV test), Microbiology, Cytology and Virology.

In the Obstetrics and Gynecology department we are privileged to serve a large number of clients. We support women throughout their lifelong journey from childbearing age to menopause and beyond while embracing our motto “Health care ministry in service to the poor”. Services are provided by medical professional who have devoted their career to caring for the unique health needs of these women.

 

 

Staffing

 

The department services are spearheaded by a team of consultant obstetricians and gynecologists who are all registered and licensed to practice by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists board. Their services are complimented by a professional team of midwives who are all registered and licensed by the Nursing Council. Working with them are Obstetric and gynecology registrars, medical officers, clinical officer with reproductive health training and nurses.

Obstetric Services

 

All obstetric care services are available including Antenatal care clinics, Labor and Delivery services, after delivery care and follow-up clinics, HIV screening and PMTCT, Vaginal delivery services, Caesarian section delivery

 

Gynecology

 

We offer a diverse range of gynecology services including General gynecology care and operations, Cervix cancer screening services and management with VIA and VILI, Colposcopy and LEEP services

 

We also provide specialized gynecology including management of infertility and female genital tract cancers

 

 

Child welfare clinics

 

We provide child welfare services including a Well baby clinic, Immunization/Vaccination services and Baby growth monitoring and weighing.

Back Up Services

To support our services, we have well equipped and functional backup services. Our Diagnostic Laboratory carries out all routine investigations and also performs specialized tests including Hormonal studies. Our radiology department provides Ultrasound services, X-ray services and HSG services

 

Operating hours

 

We run our antenatal clinics and gynecology clinics daily Mon to Friday from 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

We also run antenatal clinics on Saturdays and Sundays from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. The well baby clinic is on Thursdays from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.

The peadiatric department strives to provide affordable health care to all children regardless of their social status in the society. It offers the following sevices:

The outpatient curative and health promotion clinic.

This is a busy clinic that is totally dedicated to the children in an independent wing within the main hospital. The clinic is open daily from 8 am to 6pm. It is run by a group of dedicated clinicians with a passion for children. It has a well equipped resuscitation room where all critically ill children are first stabilized before being admitted to the ward. At the waiting bay parents are given health promotion talks daily.

The mother and child welfare clinic

This is located within the antenatal wing of the hospital. Every Thursday of the week it offers immunization services to all children.

The general paediatric ward

This department has a bed capacity of 45. It attends to over 200 sick children every month. It is run by a group of nurses and clinicians who work as team to offer the best care in a compassionate environment.

The post natal ward

The postnatal ward is a 53 bedded ward is for women who after few hours of giving birth stay here for up to 3 days before going home, mainly after normal delivery and following caeserian section.
The ward is divided into 5 rooms of between 6 to 12 beds.

The new-born unit

This is a semi autonomous unit within the pediatric department. It is run by a team of highly skilled nurses and clinician and provides round-the-clock care for newborn babies who are ill or born prematurely.

It is customized to optimize the thermo-neutral environment and minimize nosocomial infection. It is equipped with incubators and has facilities for administration of phototherapy for jaundice.
Birth Registration and issuing of birth Notification is done before discharge.

In postnatal ward we practice and support rooming in and bedding in (mother and baby sleep in the same room and bed),as well as baby friendly hospital initiatives. Our midwives give daily health messages to mothers touching on:

  • breastfeeding
  • baby care
  • Hygiene
  • nutrition
  • immunization
  • danger signs
  • breast care
  • family planning
  • common health concerns

Ward rounds are conducted by a consultant every morning.
To reduce the risk of infection children below 12years are not allowed in the ward.
Visiting hours are as per hospital policy .

The Department of Pharmacy at SMMH strives to achieve the hospital’s vision by rendering quality, affordable pharmaceuticals. The department also offers efficient and professional pharmaceutical services to patients and other clients.

At our pharmacy department, we serve an average of 800 outpatients and 100 inpatients daily. This is done by a team of highly dedicated, well trained and experienced pharmaceutical personnel.

The department ensures continuous exchange of medical knowledge by attending and participating in weekly C.M.Es conducted within the hospital and also other regular CMEs conducted elsewhere.

The pharmacy is organized into three outlets:

Main Pharmacy

  • This is the main store for bulk storage. Non-sterile extraporaneous preparations are also done here. The pharmacy serves all the hospital departments with supplies.
  • The pharmacy is open from 8.00am to 5.00pm on weekdays and closed on weekends and public holidays.

Desk A Pharmacy

  • This serves outpatients and inpatient services as well as casualty.
  • The pharmacy is open from 7.00am to 7.00pm weekdays, 8.00am to 3.00pm on Saturdays and public holidays.

Desk-B Pharmacy

  • This serves outpatient clinics- CCC/TB, diabetes, chemotherapy, Hypertension among others
  • The pharmacy is open from 7.00am to 7.00pm on weekdays and closed on weekends and public holidays.

Physiotherapy focuses on assessing and treating people of all ages with physical problems caused by illness, accidents or ageing. This is followed by treatment aimed at maintaining and restoring normal function, minimizing dysfunction, preventing disability and improving quality of life.

Our experienced Physiotherapists are “hands-on” and use skills in clinical measuring, manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, movement and electrotherapy to treat our patients. They take a holistic approach to the treatment, as most problems are caused by multiple factors to devise individualized treatment plans.

This out-patient service includes musculo-skeletal, neurology, rheumatology, orthopaedics, elderly and women’s health which includes ante-natal, post-natal and gynaecology (mainly incontinence) and is provided from 8 am – 5 pm Monday to Friday.


The surgical department offers a wide range of services that include general surgery, orthopedic surgery and endoscopy.

 

GENERAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES
The theater offers a whole range of major surgeries from laparatomies to thyroidectomies, from cholecystectomies to prostatectomies. The volume of surgeries performed ensures that the surgeons have a very high level of experience

ORTHOPEDIC PROCEDURES
Currently we have surgeries for all long bone fractures and soft tissue problems. Arthroplasties are in the process of being introduced and it is anticipated that the cost for this will be the most competitive in the country.

ENDOSCOPY SERVICES
This department has the highest number of endoscopic procedures carried out in the country. Over the last five years, over 18000 endoscopic procedures have been carried out in our facility. Services offered also includes stenting for cancer and banding for varices.

SURGICAL OUTPATIENTS
Our team of surgeons works round the clock to ensure that you receive quality and upto date examination and history taking. They are also willing and prepared to give you advice on whatever surgical procedure you may require advice on.

ANAESTHETIC TEAM
This comprises a team of disciplined anesthetists that are well trained and experienced in general and regional anesthesia, as well as resuscitation techniques.

WARDS AND ENVIRONMENT
The department has three wards for male female and pediatric patients, that are all set in the scenic, cool environment of Lang’ata, right next to the Ngong forest. This provides an ideal environment for patients to recuperate in.

Our busy Department of Radiology is dedicated to providing complete and accurate x-ray and ultrasound imaging with a commitment to new approaches to patient care, creativity, compassionate patient care, and maintaining a professional and responsive relationship with those we serve.

We offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging techniques (x-ray, ultrasound and other specialized types of radiological imaging) for our patients. Our team of professional radiologists, sonographers and radiographers are committed to the highest standards of quality and performance expected for essential diagnostic care. We also provide mobile x-ray services for our patients in the wards and theatre.
